Royal ObservatoryThe Royal Observatory was originally on Calton Hill, but moved to Blackford Hill in1896 when light pollution in the city centre became a problem. The site is home to the UK Astronomy Technology Centre and the University of Edinburgh Institute of Astonomy. The buildings are built from Hailes stone from Hailes Quarry at Kingsknowe, dressed with Doddington stone from Northumberland. The buildings were extended in 1967, using Woodkirk stone from Yorkshire. |
